Attack with your branding! January 5, 2010
So you think you’re all set for your web/social media invasion? You’ve got the website, the blog, the Twitter, the Facebook page and the kitchensink.com. Links are flying around everywhere, you update content regularly, life is good.
So what if someone found you on Twitter first, or your blog? And it looks wildly different from everything else with a generic format or template, how is a user to know it’s you, or for that person to take anything away from the experience, how is it memorable? This applies mainly to Twitter and blogs as they offer a decent level of design customisation without going overboard.
Twitter is fairly simple (I’m one of their latest to join, probably the last person in the world to do so…). Colour scheme can be easily changed and you can use a custom background. If you’re design minded then create something that echoes your branding elsewhere, whilst fitting in with the constraints of Twitter. There are tutorials online that offer great advice on sizing etc, so give it a try!
Blogs offer a lot more scope in terms of design. If you’re a dab-hand at CSS then start with the most basic template and go wild with it! If you’re not, then why not search online for tutorials, the basics can be picked up quite easily. Have a play and learn something new. Remember to keep it uniform with the rest of your online branded presence.
If you’re not design minded then don’t even attempt it, if you’re a sensible person you would have employed a web designer to create your main site anyway, so do the same for all your online presence, ask them to create the rest too, it’s all worthwhile. Why pay out for a great website then do the rest yourself and having it look terrible? Blogs, Twitter etc are great support for a main site, they help you network and promote it, if they look rubbish, no-one will want to waste a mouse-click on your main site!
