“I’m getting a website” January 29, 2010

Have you ever heard the phrase uttered by someone that they are “getting a website.” The reason why someone would want a website varies from merely having a presence online (a place where people can find out about a company and their address) to people entering various verticals/markets. There are also people who run sites for information, blogging, charity etc the list is endless.

Of those who intend to make money, some people do genuinely come up with a new service or product and want to launch this as on online venture, which is quite understandable. This is why many start-up businesses are now online companies. However aside from these reasons for getting a website, a substantial number of people who get the idea for building a website with the intention of making a money,  base their desire on misinformation and misapprehension over the ease by which others have already achieved greatness online.

The problems stems from the supposed simplicity of how websites work. The desire to build a “website” in this manner aligns closely with the get-rich-quick mentality of the late 1980′s or the dot.com bubble of the early 2000′s. The basic premise is the same, websites are easy and making money from them is easy. Because often there are no apparent physical presence needed to start a site, such as bricks, mortar and staff, some mistakenly believe that the success of a site is based solely on the sites existence.  I remember once someone asking for a website “like e-bay but cheaper” which pretty much typifies the misunderstanding. People who think they can penetrate these kind of online markets by simply building “a website” will find their hapless efforts are seldom rewarded. The reason for this is that successful websites are successful for a reason, it takes time, dedication more often than not a lot of money and above all acumen to build a truly successful site in a competitive industry.
