It’s uncontentious: content is the key February 20, 2010

So, as it happens I’ve had one hell of a week word-wizarding at Red Sauce.

I’m still a newbie, avoiding numerous wedgies and getting my glasses flushed down the toilet repeatedly, but I’m already starting to pick up on this content malarkey.

To be honest, there’s no avoiding it. I’ve been living and breathing content since I came to Red Sauce. I’d eat it, if it tasted any good.

But what have I learned so far? It’s time to empty out the ol’ noggin and sift through the lint and half-chewed sweeties for some quick tips on content…

- Content is ace. If you take one thing away with you let it be this golden nugget. Trust me on this one.

- Websites need content. Like flowers need sunshine. Like James needs oatcakes. Like Amy needs lunchtime shopping excursions. Like goats need bananas… I won’t bother explaining, but you get the picture.

- Content is authority. It’s the only way to make your website top dog.

- Make it the right kind of content. You wouldn’t put jam on your ham sandwich,  would you? (Even though it makes a satisfying rhyme…mmm jam and ham…ham and jam…wham bam jam and ham…) But no, tis folly my good knave – it just wouldn’t go. Slap a bit of mustard on there and now we’re talking! All content has a price, and the more relevant you make it to your business, the better it will work its little socks off for you.

- Keep the content coming. Back to that plant analogy (no, not the ham and jam one) – it needs regular watering to stay on top of the game. If you saunter off to Bermuda for a fortnight of sun and sand you’d expect your little seedling to be half the plant it once was on your return. Geddit? Websites need a constant supply of information to be the best.

- Goats love banana skins. Yeah, strange but true. Another weird and whimsical fact floating around the Red Sauce office courtesy of our chief goatherd Chris.

So there you have it. ‘CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT!’ shouted the crazy old man at the pigeons. But he’s right: content is the secret weapon to web domination and we need to respect and harness its powers if our online businesses are to be successful.
