MP3 tags, SEO and Google as an iPod May 11, 2010

Isn’t it annoying when you are flicking through your iPod, trying to find the right track, and then discover a song is in the wrong place, or in the wrong album?

It happens all the time. A common example is when several different artists bring out an album called ‘Greatest Hits’, and if you’ve got 10 artists who have done so then when you put them on your iPod they all get grouped together into one album.

It’s very annoying, and it’s all caused because of duplicate content.

The way to fix it is simple, just get rid of the duplicates and replace them with unique values. So instead of ‘Greatest Hits’ for 10 different artists, perhaps give unique titles such as, ‘John Lennon’s Greatest Hits’, or ‘Elvis’ Greatest Hits’, or ‘Elbow’s Greatest Hits’.

By removing the duplicates you fix the problem, and the tracks get separated into the right album.

I’m not an iPod expert but I imagine this problem is caused by how the music files are stored, grouped and sorted. The result being that an iPod can’t tell the difference between different files that have the same labels or tags. So iPod users have to make the labels completely unique, to avoid the problem.

Now Google doesn’t really have this problem and it can tell the difference between different websites regardless of duplicate content. However perhaps we should treat Google as if it couldn’t, and in doing so we would ensure our content is truly unique and distinct from other websites.
