Well with SEO in mind let’s go through the Top 6* TV adverts of all time and see why they are so special.

*It was going to be the top 6 from the channel 4 100 greatest adverts but I’ve just picked my favourites instead.

Renault Clio- Papa/Nicole Maybe not the best advert in the world but you say Papa/Nicole to someone of the right age and they will all know what you mean. Why was it so effective? It beats me. I guess this advert is a bit of an anomaly.

Walkers – Gary Lineker These adverts are memorable because they are funny; they poke fun at the image people have of Gary Linekar and reverse it. He’s no longer Mr Nice Guy who never got booked but instead he’s the guy who steals Walkers from kids because they are so nice.

R-Whites – Are you a Secret Lemonade Drinker? This advert is one of my favourites and yes I am a secret lemonade drinker. And what’s worse I always sing the song when I drink it. I think this advert is so popular and well remembered for the same reason as the shake and vac advert, the theme tune.

Boddingtons – Melanie Sykes I think we all know why this advert was so successful because Melanie Sykes is hot. Need I say more?

Tango – Orange man I think this advert caught on because of its slapstick, Benny Hill style and the big-old face slap became a bit of a gimmick on the playground. In fact it even caused a bit of controversy as children were carrying out the face slaps and really hurting each other, which is why the advert was eventually altered.

Guinness – Horses and surfers This advert was just iconic and captured the message of Guinness. It was all about the waiting and how some things are worth the wait. It was stylized and artistic and thinking about it now it really makes me want a Guinness.

Ok so what sells? Based on these adverts it is quite clear how to sell a product. You either need humour, a catchy jingle, sex appeal, a gimmick or pure style. So when making your next advert or when writing some content be sure to insert one of those into your web page, in order to appeal to the big audience.

So one week in and let me tell you what I think.

Well, I never thought I’d say this but I actually prefer it to Facebook and that’s because it’s like Facebook but a lot faster.

Let me explain…

I don’t know about everybody else but I just used Facebook for the status updates. I checked the updates and then I didn’t know what to do, so just logged off.

But with Twitter the updates (or tweets) are faster and there are more of them, so I can just leave Twitter on in the background and wait for the tweets to roll in.

But I hear you ask: “what’s the point of that?”

Well, you can follow anyone or any subject and get up-to-the-minute news from all around the world and for journalists this means that it is a vital resource.

Take me for example, I used to scour the web or Google news to find news about office space, commerce and gadgets, which usually took over 30 minutes a day. But now I’ve got twitter I can subscribe (or follow) office news and receive it instantly without doing anything.

Twitter also allows me to do a shout-out which essentially gives me my own 11 year old boy shouting “read all about…”. Whenever I write a blog or an article I can use Twitter to self-advertise and raise the web presence of my writing.

And by following key users or key topics I can get noticed and develop a following. Last night alone I gained 10 followers and I’m pretty sure that’s all down to who I follow myself.

Now if I link to one of my articles and just one person follows the link, then isn’t Twitter worth it?

The barbershop has been in town for years, and being in a town centre should be doing reasonable well, offering cheap ‘short-back-and-sides’ services. So the team wondered what we would do if we were hired to help promote his business. Believe it or not most of the techniques we discussed were offline, not online – bizarre for an online content and SEO company!What followed was a fun brain-storming morning with the daftest ideas thrown about the office. But in truth it’s the daftest ideas which work the best! We thought about dressing everyone in the office up with big beards and moustaches (even us girls!) and walking around town handing out leaflets. Or having moustache and beard stickers to stick on people’s faces on adverts and billboards with the tag “Can Curly Cut It?”

Techniques like these are so often only reserved for big brands, but when scaled down can work just as well for small businesses if done in the right way. Viral doesn’t just have to be offline, it can be online too. Viral games are big business for brands wanting a fun way to compliment their existing online strategies, who doesn’t love to play a free game? Data is collected from these game via forms players can fill into submit their high score for a possible prize. I’ve seen it in action and it really does work (did my work placement at a viral games studio a while back).Viral techniques are particularly good using social media, Facebook and Twitter are the best ways to catch a viral campaign!

‘Viral’ works how it says on the tin, like a virus. One person catches it and passes it on to more people each time. When done in the right way it can be a fun and successful way to promote your business, as long as the basics aren’t ignored of course… don’t go making a game if your content online is rubbish!
