Doorway pages
A doorway page is never expected to be seen by the user. Its sole purpose is to trick the search engine into thinking the page is relevant for a certain keyphrase. Once a user lands on this page, they are redirected to the real website. Tricking the search engines isn’t going to get you into their good books. Don’t do it, instead create content rich landing pages that both help and inform your visitors. With well written content you can still rank well.

Keyword Stuffing
Keyword stuffing is a technique where h1 and title tags are stuffed with the keyphrases you want to rank for. These keyphrases are then repeated all over the page in large quantities in the hope that you will rank well for that given term. If SEO was that simple, the top 10 search results for any given phrase would be absolute rubbish to the user. So, search engines don’t give them any credence. Stick to well written, all encompassing content on your given subject. You will receive plenty of traffic by becoming recognised as a valuable resource on a subject; not by filling a page with variations of a couple of keywords.

Invisible text
Another way of tricking the search engines (but not letting on to your visitors) is by printing vast amounts of text in the same colour as the background of the page or hiding it with javascript. If your content was well written and engaging, you wouldn’t need to hide it. And providing a valuable resource to your users will help you to rank well. Stick to visible content that both your users and search engines will love you for.

You don’t need to stoop to underhand tactics, and although new exploits will surface to trick the search engines, don’t be tempted. Remember this simple rule:

“The harder something is to do, the more impact it will have with the search engines”
