Watching the news via Twitter… July 12, 2010 No Comments
The joys of writing the Monday blog – I suppose I should probably talk about Spain, Raoul Moat or Cheryl Cole, but as per usual I’m going to talk about Twitter. You lucky people.
Now, I don’t own a television – I don’t watch that much of it, can’t afford a license at the moment and I have the internet which offers me just about the same. However, one thing I used to be slightly hindered with is the news. It tends to be the olds by the time I get to it.
BUT thanks to the power of the internet, Twitter and a handy little widget shown to me by hung-over Matthew, I can keep up-to-date with notifications and opinions of Tweeters I am following.
As powerful as Google News is, news is rarely real-time as results are collated from different sources – granted some news sites such as BBC, Sky News and FIFA offer real-time updates, but you are restricted to remaining on the specific page.
Tweet, Tweet and spreading the seeds (or birdfood) June 22, 2010 No Comments
Last week I was persuaded to start Tweeting because “apparently” Twitter is where it’s at for future journalists.
So one week in and let me tell you what I think.
Well, I never thought I’d say this but I actually prefer it to Facebook and that’s because it’s like Facebook but a lot faster.
Let me explain…
The death of the newspaper April 28, 2010 No Comments
Newspapers have been the only way to consume the latest news, gossip and other worldly goings-on for the last century, but it seems that has now come to an end. But just why has this sturdy medium gone out of fashion?
Newspapers, by their very nature, can only report static events with very little or indeed no interaction from the the reader. Once an event has passed it won’t be reported on again. In comparison, online content is a very different story. Here a handy search engine will find you all the news and information you could possibly want on a subject going back as far as when reporters/writers started writing for the web.
Saucy news! December 1, 2009 No Comments
Readers of our local paper The Sentinel were in for a shock last night, opening the centre spread to find James, Simon and Chris staring back at them. Thankfully it was an article about the Sentinel Business Awards and not ‘Staffordshire’s Most Wanted’!
We’ve been nominated for the Best Use of IT and Communications Award this year (sponsored by BT Local Business Stoke). They approached us about the award after following our success with online content and SEO, making us really stand out in our local area.
“We are creating industry news feeds with news content updated daily, which is at the heart of enabling our clients to boost their online presence. The content we produce benefits them as businesses, as they can increase traffic to their websites. It also raises their brand profiles, allows them to communicate with their customers, and turns their websites from orthodox sites into trusted online resources within their industries” says Simon in the interview.
It’s an exciting prospect for us to end the year with a fantastic nomination such as this, and fingers crossed maybe we can start 2010 with a fantastic award to match!
Is my site suitable for News Content? May 5, 2009 No Comments
A lot of the time when we approach new companies about investing in our news content service, we receieve responses such as “my industry is too specific or niche for regular content”. A lot of businesses think what on earth is there to write about. Well you would be suprised at just how much information there is on the web already. Simply do a Google search for the main term that represents your business and see how many matching results there are. I have just queried a random term “Garage Doors” and found over 24 million matching results!
One of the most successful content lead sites is the serviced office news sites…www.choregus.co.uk. You might think “how much can you possibly write about offices?” The answer is an awful lot – over 1,200 blog posts to date! Remember as well you don’t have to create new stories yourself, you can write about others have written, give your own slant / commentary or even review other sites. Whatever you think would be of interest to the user. In some cases it may be appropriate to only write once per day in certain niche industries, however because it a more specific industry, you will find it easier to make an impact online as there is fewer other resources.
