Prince and the death of the internet July 7, 2010 No Comments
He might want our extra time and our “Kiss” but it seems Prince definitely doesn’t want our internet!
The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, or whatever he’s calling himself these days, sparked controversy throughout the internet world this week when he announced the internet was dead! Hmm… that’s news to us!
According to the “Raspberry Beret” legend, the internet is like so yesterday! “The intenet’s completely over… ,” he proclaimed while trying to stir up hype over his new album. In words which will come as a dagger to the heart of intenet-based companies like our good selves, Prince went on to say the internet was like (shock horror) MTV – “At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated,” he told the (ahem) high-brow newspaper The Daily Mirror. How is content like the hottest new band on the block? May 23, 2010 No Comments
You’ve seen it all by now. They come out once a year or so…. the coolest new band that you “just have to hear” so, obligingly you go and buy their CD, I mean download their album (!) and stick it on your iPod.
The love-in’s great for the first few weeks. You think that it’s one love affair that can’t come to an end and you declare them as the best band in the world but sneakily, and without warning, this can all change. Over time their songs slowly drop off your “most listened to” tunes and they start to become a distant memory.
OK, so you still love that old guitar riff and that high-pitched squeal in the bridge but the sad truth of the matter is that they’re old…. OK, maybe not as old as James but still, for someone of our generation, old! They might bring a new album out and, out of curiosity, you download one or two songs but alas, it’s all the same! Those once loved ditties start to become an annoyance and you start to realise that the lead singer’s once cool hair is now balding and grey! *sigh* Read the rest of this entry »

OK, by now you should’ve got the message that here at redsauce.com we love, love, lurrrvvveee blogging! Yes, that’s right – we just can’t get enough of WordPress, tags and all-in-one SEO packs – in fact, they’ve even started to creep into my dreams…. worrying but true!
Anyhooo…. just what is it about blogs that gets us hot under the collar and makes us perspire ever so slightly?!
Firstly blogs are great for expanding your knowledge in a none geeky way! OK, so maybe it’s still geeky but nevermind…! Since starting work here around 7 months ago I’ve become an expert on petrol forecourts, business networking, chemical cleaning products, virtual desktops, office space and car leasing! Phew! To pay or not to pay?! April 22, 2010 No Comments
Ding, ding, ding! The first round’s out and it looks like Gordon Brown’s going to win!
No… don’t worry James, I’ve not got my election head on and I’m not about to launch into some political tirade! I’m actually talking about online content! Yes, our Prime Minister is just the latest high profile figure to launch into the “to pay or not to pay?” debate. And as you’ve probably guessed, Mr Murdoch is definitely not in Mr Brown’s good books!
He’s spoken out this week about Rupert Murdoch’s plans to introduce paywalls to access The Times and The Sunday Times online. Talking to the Radio Times, Mr Brown said the idea was infeasible because internet users were already used to accessing content for free. Read the rest of this entry »
Could Facebook be about to panic? April 18, 2010 No Comments
Panic buttons were once only the luxury of wealthy aristocrats who feared robbery and violence were imminent, but if worried parents are to get their way, we could be seeing a lot more of them.
Now, before you start breaking into houses to have a good, close-up look I’m actually talking about online panic buttons on Facebook. The hugely popular social media site is coming under increasing pressure to install panic buttons on every page of their site for anyone who feels they are in danger. And it’s not just worried parents who are calling for the changes. This week top police chiefs have urged the site to take action following the death of a 17 year old girl who was murdered after meeting a man on Facebook.
Tips for a better looking blog March 2, 2010 No Comments
Well done you have a blog, and you’re writing it frequently. But it looks awful. Slap!
So what can you do? Read on…
Start with a decent theme – If you understand CSS etc really well you can make your own, if you’re a complete novice, shop around online for themes you can buy and install yourself. It’s really easy to do, and there are loads of tutorials online to show you how. If you’re in between a newbie and a pro, then take the most simple theme going and adapt it, that way you wont have to write any new code and but there is a wide scope to play about. Just make sure it looks unique and memorable, brand it for yourself. Read the rest of this entry »
BBC sparks anger from newspapers over iPhone plans February 28, 2010 No Comments
The BBC have thrown another spanner into the online content battle after announcing plans to launch a dedicated free app to deliver BBC content straight to the iPhone.
The newspaper industry are up in arms over the decision to deliver quality content, such as news services and the popular iPlayer TV service, straight to mobile devices. The Newspapers Publishers Association are so incensed they’re set to complain to ministers and the BBC Trust. Their complaint? They believe the latest smartphone app will “distort the market”. Nothing to do with their greedy plans to start charging for online content then?!
The app was announced at last week’s Mobile World Congress and is set to be available for iPhone users and other mobile devices, such as Blackberry and Google’s Android, by the end of the year. Read the rest of this entry »
Happy Birthday YouTube! February 21, 2010 No Comments
Can you remember a time without YouTube? No, neither can I!
The online video monster site is celebrating its fifth birthday this week! Those five years have flown by quickly haven’t they? The site which was created to allow “anyone with a video camera and an internet connection…to share a story with the world” has gone from strength to strength since its launch in February 2005. YouTube proved an instant hit with a generation which has sparked the user generated content phenomenon. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s uncontentious: content is the key February 20, 2010 No Comments
So, as it happens I’ve had one hell of a week word-wizarding at Red Sauce.
I’m still a newbie, avoiding numerous wedgies and getting my glasses flushed down the toilet repeatedly, but I’m already starting to pick up on this content malarkey.
To be honest, there’s no avoiding it. I’ve been living and breathing content since I came to Red Sauce. I’d eat it, if it tasted any good.
But what have I learned so far? It’s time to empty out the ol’ noggin and sift through the lint and half-chewed sweeties for some quick tips on content…
Who needs content more – small sites or large established brands? February 8, 2010 No Comments
I get asked this question quite a bit, both from people in the industry and people just starting to learn about the magic of content.
The answer – of course – is both, but perhaps for different reasons.
Larger Sites
Larger sites, especially those that have Google ‘authority’ already can benefit huge, huge amounts with the injection of content to already established pages on their site.
For example, a company that I have encountered recently has 300,000 pages on their site with only manufacturer product descriptions on each page, rendering most of the content on the site redundant. The site has authority, has a great brand name offline and is a real content sleeping giant. Read the rest of this entry »
