What makes a successful blog? November 3, 2009

Typing_monkey_768pxAs we told you last week, company blogs are ultimately crucial to your website. Blogs can be a great way to attract customers, share news and create unique content for your website.

And the great thing is that there’s no set rules to what your blog has to contain – it’s completely up to you. It’s your blog so you can write about what you want, when you want and how you want. But there are a few things you can do to make your blog that little bit more successful in attracting customers.

Having only been here for two weeks, I’m still learning the basics but I’ll share everything I know:

1. Remember who you’re writing for; It’s no use using techie jargon if your customers aren’t computer geeks. It might look good but ultimately it’s going to alienate your clients and drive your traffic right down. Similarly, remember the web is a universal tool; it’s no good writing in cockney-rhyming slang if you want to attract customers from America. They won’t understand a word and a silly thing like this could easily drive them straight into the arms of your competitor!

2. Using links is not a bad thing; In fact, using links is a great way to give your blog some authority and might prompt search engines to like it a bit more. And there’s a chance the websites you link to might link back to you in the future, potentially increasing your number of clients.

3. Keep it pretty; We all know that if you see a big block of text in a newspaper it turns you off. This is exactly the same on the web. Break your posts down into paragraphs of no more than 3 or 4 sentences for your blog. You’ll immediately see a difference in looks and traffic. Similarly, don’t be afraid to use bold and colours – this is another great way to break text up and helps your customer find the really important information quickly and easily.

4. Try to keep it frequent; Ideally you need to be blogging regularly to attract customers. In a perfect world, we think you should blog daily but, in reality, we know many companies just don’t have the time. If you can’t blog daily, blog every other day or twice a week. The key thing is to keep the blogging as regular as you can. This way your customers will start to recognise your routine and come back on the days you post.

5. Stay on topic; OK, so it’s your company blog but does anyone really want to know what Sandra got up to on holiday?! Choose a topic and try to stick to it. If you do want to blog about more than one topic, keep it interesting! And try to be informative – you do want your clients to come back!
