What to blog about? January 12, 2010

We’re always saying how a blog can really help your website, and even humanise it a little. After all it’s always good to know there are real people behind the shiny website! But sometimes it’s it can be really tricky to think of what to actually write about…

Here’s some ideas which should help you out:

1. Check industry news, you probably subscribe to a few online e-zines and even some paper magazines related to your business and industry. A quick flick through them will work wonders, try not to pick anything too controversial or you might have the wrong opinion and give yourself a bad name. Stick to safe interesting subjects, i.e. a designer could write about someone’s work who has inspired them or the latest software developments. Have an opinion, but don’t take it too far and argue about it to yourself or your blog will turn into a rant!

2. Look around you! What’s going on in your workplace? Anything interesting or fun that might interest readers? Just don’t give away all your dirty secrets and make sure to leave out the constant swearing. Has someone been on holiday, if so where and what’s going on in that area in regards to your own area of expertise? Or maybe pretend a little…or just tell stories from relevant experiences.

3. Come up with some useful tips and tricks. people like those, just don’t give away the important stuff or else what’s the point in paying for your services! But appear helpful and approachable and the interest will roll in. You never know someone might ask for help on something and you can talk them into paying for it.

4. Humour, perhaps a simple joke or cartoon, it will really entertain people, as usual behave with it though! Readers like to smile believe it or not… but no naughty words!!

5. Introductions are an ideal way to blog for your first few posts, perhaps conduct a fun interview style blog with the people you work with. It could be a great way for both you and your readers to get to know them!

6. Stick to what you know… don’t talk about what you don’t understand, remember a “Jack of all trades is a master of none”.

7. Always be relevant. Whatever you do, you’ll be surprised how relevant things can be, as long as it relates to you, your industry or even just your desk, you can make a blog very broad in focus. Just don’t stretch it too far. People wont care about about some weird Government conspiracy theory you have if you’re running a blog for your plumbing site. Avoid alienating yourself.

8. No ranting, sort of covered earlier but very important. You may get a rise out of some readers but you will probably just get a torrent of abuse or you’ll just put your readers off by sounding like a moaning so and so.
